PTA Jandakot Bus Depot

The Public Transport Authority engaged Swan Group to deliver the fitout of a new bus depot in Jandakot, purpose-built to support Transperth’s operations.

Location: Jankadot, WA
Designers: MPS Architects
Size: 25,000 m²
Duration: 56 weeks
The project included the administration office complex and workshop facility, along with supporting infrastructure such as wash and fuel facilities, diesel and AdBlue storage, and access road connections. Swan Group’s scope of works also involved delivering external and internal fitout elements. These included site-wide bitumen pavements for depot entry and exit, bus and car circulation, and parking. Ancillary structures and service areas were incorporated into the site layout, coordinated with paving, landscaping, and perimeter fencing to ensure secure and efficient movement throughout the facility. Internally, the administration and workshop buildings were fitted out to meet PTA’s requirements, supporting both operational and maintenance functions. A key aspect of the fitout was the integration of site services, including lighting, CCTV, and security infrastructure. Swan installed lighting columns, footings, conduits, cabling, and distribution boards across the entire site. The CCTV system was delivered with poles, footings, and underground cabling to enable comprehensive surveillance coverage. The security package included access control systems, alarms, and detectors, installed using dedicated conduits and cabling. These components were carefully coordinated during the fitout phase to ensure seamless functionality upon completion.

Sequenced delivery and safety innovation

Throughout the program, Swan Group maintained a rolling two-week lookahead schedule, aligning closely with PTA’s project management and stakeholder teams. This planning tool helped coordinate trades, reduce rework, and streamline activities across a complex, multi-zoned site. During the tender phase, Swan identified an opportunity to enhance safety outcomes and reduce costs by modifying the structural delivery methodology. In consultation with a steel subcontractor, the team arranged for the structural roof frame and sheeting to be fully assembled on the ground and lifted into place in sections. This method eliminated the need for full scaffolding and significantly reduced the number of elevated work platforms and mobile cranes required onsite. As a result, the number of man-hours spent on high-risk tasks at height was minimised. This structural approach delivered direct benefits to the fitout program by opening up internal zones earlier and allowing internal trades to progress with fewer constraints. With safer access and reduced site congestion, Swan’s team could complete detailed fitout works within the administration and workshop facilities more efficiently and with lower risk.

Practical delivery with long-term function

The Jandakot Bus Depot fitout was completed in full compliance with PTA’s technical specifications and operational expectations. Drainage, bulk earthworks, and retaining wall systems were coordinated with the internal and external works to ensure durability and functionality. The integration of services across all areas of the depot was timed to align with both structural completion and internal fitout sequencing. Swan Group delivered the project with a clear focus on construction efficiency, risk reduction, and operational readiness. Each component of the fitout was delivered according to scope and in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. The result is a fully operational public transport facility that reflects the requirements of the client and supports long-term service delivery across the Transperth network.
