University of Notre Dame Student Hub

The University of Notre Dame Australia is a national 5-star Catholic university with over 12,000 students across its campuses in Fremantle, Broome, and Sydney.

Location: Fremantle
Designers: Hames Sharley, Arup
Size: 5,692m2
Duration: 70 Weeks
The purpose of this project was to create a modern and vibrant new Student Hub on the Fremantle campus.

This project consisted of 3 separable portions, allowing for the continued use of the large university complex while the refurbishment was taking place. The Student Hub project allowed St Teresa’s Library, Bateman Courtyard, the Student Life and Scholarships offices, Craven Law Library and adjacent teaching buildings to be transformed into a modern, vibrant and interconnected new student precinct.

The project included:

  • A New Teaching and Learning Facility featuring a contemporary Craven Law Centre, moot court facility, three new teaching rooms and a dedicated 24/7 study space for graduate research students.
  • Refurbishment of St Teresa’s Library into a world-class new learning and study environment with seminar rooms, silent and collaborative study spaces.
  • A secure 24-hour study hall with swipe card access directly opposite Prindiville Hall.
  • Roof replacements of large sections of the roof.
  • Courtyard Upgrade

This project involved significant challenges, including work on some of Perth’s oldest buildings. The team tackled uneven floors, termite-damaged beams, and structural issues, all while managing the installation of new mechanical units on the roof. Persistent damp and high soil salt content also affected several structural elements. Despite these hurdles, the team worked closely with client representatives and consultants to find effective, site-specific solutions to every unexpected challenge
