Murdoch Uni Glasshouses

The Murdoch University Glasshouses Refurbishment Project successfully upgraded Glasshouses 1, 3, and 4, enhancing infrastructure to create controlled environments for research.

Location: Murdoch
Designers: Armstrong Collective
Size: 1,000m2
Duration: 12 Weeks
The refurbishment involved significant improvements to the building envelope, as well as mechanical and electrical systems. Existing structures were replaced with new polycarbonate cladding and sliding doors, offering improved insulation and weatherproofing. Integrated exhaust fans were installed within the cladding to maintain air quality and precise temperature control essential for plant growth studies. Electrical updates included modifications to distribution boards, addition of three-phase power supplies, and installation of isolators to meet the new mechanical requirements.

Mechanical upgrades featured the installation of temperature-only aspirator units and adjustments to cooling systems to enable precise environmental management, similar to laboratory conditions where strict control is critical. The project was staged to allow phased completion, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing research activities. Extensive testing, commissioning, and documentation of all new systems were completed, ensuring compliance with Murdoch University standards. This refurbishment supported the University’s goal of providing high-quality, controlled environments for cutting-edge research and education .
